Microsoft Discontinues GPT Builder Only Five Months In
Microsoft Copilot AI is based on the same GPT language model as ChatGPT, so it has many of the same features. That included GPT Builder, a way for people to create customized chatbots that behave a specific way or have access to certain data. However, Microsoft is now shutting down its version of GPT Builder only a few months after it was first introduced.
Microsoft has announced that its GPT Builder feature in Copilot is shutting down, which allowed people to put together their own tailor-made chatbots for different use cases. It was similar to ChatGPT’s GPT Builder , which is still available for ChatGPT Plus subscribers. You won’t be able to create new GPTs starting on July 10th, while all user-generated chatbots will be deleted by July 14th.
Microsoft is getting rid of GPT Builder as quickly as possible, while also giving people time to make other arrangements if they need to keep using those GPTs, such as moving them to ChatGPT. However, GPT Builder requires a paid ChatGPT Plus subscription , and Microsoft’s version required a Copilot Pro subscription. If you really need GPT Builder, and also still need Copilot Pro, you now need two subscriptions.
All data associated with GPTs will also be promptly deleted from Microsoft’s servers. As reasoning for this move, Microsoft is only saying the following:
We are continuing to evaluate our strategy for consumer Copilot extensibility and are prioritizing core product experiences, while remaining committed to developer opportunities. To this end, we are shifting our focus on GPTs to Commercial and Enterprise scenarios and are stopping GPT efforts in consumer Copilot.
GPTs will still be available for business users, but Microsoft is giving up completely for consumers. As for why it’s doing this, other than the statement we have above, we have absolutely no clue. Given it’s a feature that only lasted a whopping five months , we’re going to go out of a limb here and say that probably not a lot of people were using the feature. Those who are using any GPT Builder are probably doing it through ChatGPT rather than Copilot. OpenAI has an actual storefront where you can get GPTs made by other users, so you don’t necessarily need to put one together unless you have a very niche use case.
