Navigate with Innovation: Google Maps’ Expansion Into Advanced AR Technology

Google Maps is rolling out a new augmented reality (AR) feature that lets you explore and interact with the histories of famous landmarks in an immersive experience.

AR superimposes interactive computer-generated images and sounds on top of real-world views, providing a more immersive experience. Currently only available for Parisian and Singaporean landmarks as a six-month pilot, it’s not yet known whether Google plans to roll this feature out to other cities and their architectural backstories. Google has hinted that we should “be on the lookout for more content in the future.”

If you’re lucky enough to be in Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games , simply search for the location that you’re in, such as the Eiffel Tower. Then, if it’s supported by Google Maps’ new feature, you’ll be able to tap “AR Experience” in the app, and point your device in the landmark’s direction to journey back to the 1900s with interactive information cards. From there, you can “dive deeper into its history and culture.”

Even if you’re not physically located at the landmark that you’re hoping to learn more about, Google states that you can still experience this new AR interactivity from anywhere in the world using Google Maps’ Street View. What’s more, if you like what you see, you can share your experience with others through a QR code or URL.

Since Google Maps is working with its partners, Google Arts & Culture and Ubisoft, to introduce this real-time experience, Google assures you that the information provided is accurate and comprehensive. Google is continuing to add more historical Parisian locations to its new AR feature, and by the end of the summer, you’ll be able to go back as far as the late-18th century, learning about the famous histories of the Bastille Sant-Antione and the Palais des Tuileries.
